I feel this post is ever so necessary. To figure out what happened regarding Jared Padelecki, I scoured tumblr. Scoured, searched, googled, quested, EVERYTHING, and I couldn’t find ONE SINGLE POST that had what he actually said.
Nobody else sees the problem with this?
Fan: Supernatural has a very male dominated cast. I was wondering— I wanted to ask what it feels like when you work with female actors, and if it adds, like, a different dynamic to…like, on set? Like if it adds a different dynamic on set.
[Quips from the boys about Jared’s marrying Gen]
Jared: I don’t think it makes it too different. I think it’s easy in a male dominated cast to not have to—. There’s so many shows that deal with romance that there needs to be a show that doesn’t deal with romance. That’s why you have Supernatural, to deal with all the other parts- to deal with the many other facets of human nature and existence, even in a bizarre way. But we don’t have to worry about “Ooh, now there’s a scene where this is…” It just kind of, we can make a show about something else.”
Aisha: Can I totally chip in as a fan? The thing that I told you when you came on my Podcast, and Misha, too. That I feel like what’s great about Supernatural, despite the monsters and everything, is that this is a show about the interior relationships of men and the interior lives of men, and that’s very rare. That those relationships are, you know, they’re emotional, they’re complex, they’re dynamic. And, uh, when you are looking at a show where it’s all about male/female relationships, that’s the focus. But to see these guys that are struggling with their familial relationships and their inner masculine relationships is really unusual in TV, and I think the show does that very, very well. And if you like guys, or you’re curious about men, or you have a guy in your life, it’s a great show to watch to understand…you know, not all men, but these men, these characters who I think are really well written guys…super hot too, but that’s not the point…I mean, I think that’s what’s really, really wonderful about Supernatural.
Jensen: Very well put. Thank you.
I haven’t seen one other copy of this on tumblr so far. That’s a HUGE problem, because it means people are just jumping on a bandwagon and going off only hearsay rather than investigating and thinking for themselves.
- Before you hate, investigate.
- The question was about how having women on the show changes the dynamics on the set, not about how the guys feel about having female characters in the story.
- All Jared said was that he enjoyed working on a show that didn’t deal with romantic story lines. (Which all lines up with what’s he said about not liking the Amelia storyline because it felt out of place.)
- There are plenty of fans who have admitted that “If Cas were female Destiel would have happened by now.” All Jared did was point out the same trope.
- Jared worked on Gilmore Girls. If the writers and producers want to write in more female characters, I don’t think he’d have that much of a problem working with women (which would be the case if he were actually misogynistic).
And MOST importantly:
- The only thing Jared’s guilty of here is not actually answering the question.
And as a bonus, I’m gonna mention that at the end of the panel, Jared and Misha were thanked by two female fans for the Funko dolls they were given by the actors, and Jared immediately stood up and asked if they’d like them signed. When you call him a piece of trash for one comment, that says more about YOU than it does about him, because he goes out of his way for people he doesn’t know and you’re just hating on someone you don’t know.
Thank you for this. I was browsing around Tumblr and kept seeing posts about Jared being a misogynist and was like “wtf is the fandom bitching about NOW”?
I have said from the beginning myself, I don’t watch SPN for its romantic content. If I want to watch romance, I’ll watch another show. It’s never been about that to me. As any show that has humans in it, there’s going to be a bit here and there, but the focus of the show is NOT romance.
It’s SUPernatural, not SOAPernatural :P
It seems that there are some members of the fandom who aren’t happy unless they have something about the show to bitch about. If that’s what you are doing, then maybe it’s time for you to watch another show. It stops being “entertainment” when it pisses you off.
